In Serra da Capivara since 2008, Uwe knows the park inside out — he has accompanied visits with ambassadors from several countries, geologists, biologists and specialists of all kinds. An ICMBio-trained fire brigadier (brigadista) and a licensed guide since 2025.
He organised and accompanied the filming of Terra X (ZDF) in the park and guided science journalists whose reports appeared in the FAZ, the SZ and other German media. Historian (Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf), with a master's in policy for protected areas (Potsdam) and an MBA (FIA/USP); he is also a nurse.

The park is vast and the sites are far apart. To see the highlights, we recommend at least two days.
Entry to the park is free. Guiding is arranged directly with your booking through Casa Barreirinho.
You can visit year-round — the Caatinga changes greatly with the rains:
Best period: May to July (mild) or February to April (green Caatinga).

The park has 17 wheelchair-accessible sites. Among the best documented are Boqueirão da Pedra Furada, Sítio do Meio and Baixão das Andorinhas. Conditions can change with construction or rain — we confirm with the guide on the day of the visit.
The archaeologist who revealed Serra da Capivara to the world

The Brazilian archaeologist Niède Guidon devoted more than four decades to Serra da Capivara. Under her leadership more than 800 archaeological sites were identified — hundreds of them with rock paintings — and in 1991 the National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Born in São Paulo in 1933 and trained in France, she arrived in the region in 1973 and never left. Beyond research, she worked for the local community: schools, workshops and jobs were created in São Raimundo Nonato and nearby villages on her initiative — the park and the community grew together.
Founder of FUMDHAM (Fundação Museu do Homem Americano), she lived and worked in São Raimundo Nonato until her death on 4 June 2025. In her honour, the regional airport now bears the name Aeroporto Serra da Capivara – Niède Guidon.
From Europe or within Brazil — how to reach Casa Barreirinho.
By air is easiest: from Paris (Air France) or Lisbon (TAP) to Fortaleza. At Fortaleza airport, pick up a rental car directly — take the lift outside down to the lower level, where the providers' shuttle buses (Movida = orange, Localiza = green) run to the rental station.
Tip: Book the rental car from abroad including all insurance — adding it later is usually not possible.
Drive Fortaleza → Coronel José Dias: about 850 km on the BR-020, roughly 11–12 hours. The road is well built but not comparable to European highways.
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Aeroporto de Petrolina – Senador Nilo Coelho (PNZ) in Pernambuco, about 280 km (roughly 4 hours by car) from the Casa. From there by rental car or our transfer. The road via Remanso to Coronel José Dias is well built — drive by day.
Via Teresina airport: about 550–600 km depending on the route, roughly 6–7 hours by car.
By bus: the company Lider runs Teresina – São Raimundo Nonato regularly. If you want to get off in Coronel José Dias, it's best to let the driver know.
The area around Serra da Capivara is calm and welcoming. It's a remote region — plan your drives without rushing, travel by day and arrange your arrival time with us. The easiest option is for us to pick you up, so you arrive relaxed.

Under the GRU Airport group and the federal AmpliAR programme, the airport in São Raimundo Nonato (NSR) is preparing for scheduled flights — not yet operational. Until then, arrival is via Petrolina.
